If you plan to serve alcohol in California, you’ll need a Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) certification. This requirement applies to servers, bartenders, and managers at establishments that sell alcohol for on-site consumption. Here’s how to get certified:
1. Register on the RBS Portal
Visit the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) RBS portal and create an account. This allows you to track your certification status and access required training materials.
2. Complete an Approved RBS Training Course
You must take an RBS training program from a provider approved by the California ABC. The course covers topics like state alcohol laws, preventing over-service, and handling intoxicated patrons. The training typically takes 2-4 hours and can be done online or in person.
3. Pass the RBS Exam
After completing the training, you’ll need to pass the California ABC RBS exam. You’ll have three attempts to score at least 70%. The exam is available through the RBS portal and must be taken within 30 days of finishing the training.
4. Receive Your Certification
Once you pass the exam, your RBS certification is valid for three years. Employers may verify your certification status through the RBS portal.
Since the law requires compliance by alcohol-serving establishments, getting your RBS certification ensures you’re legally allowed to serve alcohol in California.
